Former Ghanaian international and Black Queens midfielder, Doreen Angelina Awuah has addressed allegations of lesbianism within the team.
The women’s national team has on numerous occasions been a topic of controversy due to perceived acts of lesbianism among the players. These suspicions have been strongly refuted in the past.
Angelina in a recent turn of events also spoke on the matter during an interview with Newshuntermag.com‘s Kofi Oppong Kyekyeku on Unlimted Chat with K.O.K on Top City TV.
She rubbished the claims as mere speculations, emphasizing the challenges and determination that the players had to contend with, which left them little room for such indulgences.
“We testify to what we see. I went to the national team camp with determination, resolved to not let anything distract me so I didn’t even pay attention to those speculations. I am from a very humble background, where I come from, things are tough so the camp was not a place for me to poke my nose into other people’s business.
“My concentration was on the game and how to make good use of my talent. It was a mere speculation because when you get there, it’s rare to find those with rich parents. We were all from humble beginnings. At the time, the selection was not easy. If you look at Bayor, Florence Okoh, Shiela Okine, Lydia Ankrah, and others, the squad was strong. It wasn’t child’s play so we worked hard to ensure the opportunity we had didn’t slip by.
“We worked hard in order to be called because the more you played, the more you also earned. For me, I didn’t even have time. The time I had was for training, eating, and praying. That was my routine” she explained.
Doreen also stressed the importance of not jumping to conclusions, pointing out that female friendships among the women’s team should not be seen any differently than those in the male team.
“You can’t expect girls to meet and not make friends. Guys make friends, don’t they? If you check the Black Stars, for instance, Kudus is very close to Kamaldeen so why don’t we say that they are gays? Sometimes, you just can’t take everything you hear seriously.
“You should be focused on what you’re doing not what people are saying. Whatever everyone was saying were their own opinions and they were entitled to those. My focus was to make money and change home,” Doreen added.
