CEO of Kumawood Akoben Film Festival Awards, Mr. Samuel Darko
has asserted that the inception of the award scheme has helped improve movie
making.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Murphy Lee on Kumasi-based
Bohye FM, Mr. Darko stated that the introduction of the award has boosted the
confidence of hardworking movie makers who were neglected in the past.
“Looking at awards in Ghana, it appeared that other peoples
were sidelined, meanwhile, they were doing great job. So that gave birth to Kumawood
Awards. And that has helped the improvement of movie making. In all we wanted
to help and boost the confidence of those who were neglected,” he said.
On why the organizers have introduced a new category, he
explained: “Every year we have what trends as far as the awards are concerned.
Since 2011, we have seen changes in the stories that come out. We look at
trending movies and series for the nominations.”
Mr. Samuel Darko also revealed some of the challenges he
face in organizing the awards.
“Organizing such an event in Kumasi is very hectic. If God
doesn’t help you…and you being courageous you cannot do it. We don’t even have
an auditorium for events. So you pass through a lot of difficulties if you want
to organize a colorful event. Secondly, getting sponsors here is not easy
because most of them do not understand the whole concept…and they do not want
to invest in that.”
He further revealed how people threaten him after they have failed
to win.
 “I have been
threatened so many times. They feel cheated if they do not win it…but if they
win, they think it is the best. I do not have the power to manipulate the system;
I am working with a team,” the CEO of Kumawood Akoben Film Festival Awards
disclosed.
Asked who will determine the winner, he answered: “The board
takes 70% whilst 30% goes to the public.”
He concluded by advising drivers not to drink and drive as
the Christmas festivities approaches.
