Two third year students from the Knustford

University College, East Legon, Accra, have

reportedly drowned in the Volta river.

The deceased, Edward Alele 22 and Charles

Honesty 20 all Nigerians, were part of about

200 students from the school who had

travelled to Akosombo as part of activities

marking the school's Students Representative

Council (SRC) Week celebrations.

According to the National Disaster

Management Orgnasition(NADMO) in

Asuogyaman District, the students got

drowned after a local canoe they had hiredd

to cruise on the river capsized Friday,

November 22 at about 2:15 pm.

Lovejoy Dusi, District NADMO Coordinator for

the area told Joy Joy News that a group of

five of the students allegedly offered to

contract a local canoe owner to ferry them at

a fee of GHs2 each, instead of a boat cruise

for which they were being charged GHs10

each.

Mr. Dusi said midway into the journey, the

overloaded boat capsized resulting in the

disaster. He said it took local fishermen

hours to retrieve bodies of the deceased.

The NADMO official said the boat which was

mainly built for fishing was overloaded and

had no live jackets on board.

The deceased bodies have since been

deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for

autopsy.
