The Brong Ahafo Regional Chapter of Distance Education
Students Association of Ghana, University of Cape Coast (DESAG-UCC) has held a
day capacity building seminar at Sunyani.

 The participants were
from nine (9) centers which made up the Brong Ahafo Chapter of DESAG-UCC. The
centers are;  Hwediem, Kintampo, Dormaa,
Nkoranza, Seikwa, Drobo, Techiman and two (2) in Sunyani.
The seminar was themed: “Capacity Building For Effective Modern
Day Graduate.”

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, The B/A
Regional President of DESAG-UCC, Mr. Mahama Babie articulated the need to add
value to the student body before they graduate from school.
“We have seen the necessity of building the capacity of our
students. Nowadays it is common we have students who have graduated in the
house and do not have jobs, we feel when we add value to ourselves whiles in
school before even graduating, we will be able to establish our own businesses
in the house and we will no more sit in the house looking for jobs in the
public or private sector. The motivation is that we want to be businessmen…if
you look all over the world now, those who make it big in life are those who
have their own businesses so we want to create that mentality of business
ownership in our students whiles in the school.”
According to him the number of unemployment will be reduced
if the students are able to establish a bigger business in the future because
they can employ others.
“The issue of postings is a bigger concern to DESAG, on
several occasions we have fought this issue at the national level. We want government
to as a matter of urgency absorb our students who graduate from the university.
We are aware that there are a lot of schools who do not have teachers and are
being handled by pupil teachers all over from Senior High School (SHS) level.
So we believe if government can help absorb our products from
the university who will fill the vacancy that are existing in the primary
schools to the SHS level will be helping to eliminate the unemployment we have
in the system and also give employment opportunities to our people to
contribute to the national development that we all aspire to have in this
country,” Mr. Babie posited.

Mr. Prince Affum of Catholic University of Ghana-Fiapre, who
was a facilitator at the seminar called on the government to create an
atmosphere which will attract private investors.
“We cannot sit down and wait for government to provide jobs
for us so we need to do something for ourselves…develop entrepreneur skills but
at the same time there should be some opportunities out there for us. I think
what the government can do is to create that atmosphere that will enable a lot
of private investors into the system. That atmosphere that will give room for
graduate to manifest their potentials and do something for themselves rather
than depending on the institutions that government has provided by itself.”
