Customs intercepts textiles, drinks at Aflao border

Customs officers along the Aflao Border in the Volta Region, have intercepted bales of wax prints, cartons of assorted drinks and other items concealed in a false compartment built beneath the floor of a vehicle.

The items are 335 wax prints, 78 cartons of Hollandia Yorghurts, 320 yards of poly cotton materials, 100 crates of Maltina Drinks and five crates of other soft drinks. Others are 7 cartons of cooking oil and 15 pieces of mosquito nets.

Speaking to Citi News, the Aflao Sector Commander of the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), Mr Confidence Nyadzi, said his officers met two occupants of the vehicle during a routine patrol.

Further investigations revealed that the items were concealed to ostensibly evade tax. “In fact, it was an empty vehicle but it has some false compartment. After the necessary checks, we suspected there were some concealed items in it so we brought it to Aflao,” he said.

The driver of the vehicle with registration number MUS 139 XQ, Razak Osman and his mate, Salam Nuhu are currently in police custody.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the border. In December last year, a truck driver was arrested for concealing thousands of short cartridges (bullets) together with sealed packs of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp in his car.
